The first attempt by Mormon missionaries to settle the area now known as Moab, Utah, failed after just a few months,
due primarily to leadership problems and conflicts with Native Americans. The monument pictured here honors the 41 men who took part in the Elk Mountain Mission. My column about the mission is linked below.
